In a heartfelt collaboration between Project Graduation, Roanoke Rapids High School (RRHS), and ABRM Elite Murals, a striking mural was created to commemorate the class of 2020. This vibrant artwork, designed to leave a lasting imprint on the school, is more than just a mural; it's a symbol of pride, achievement, and unity that radiates Yellow Jacket spirit.
The Inspiration and Vision
The class of 2020 sought to gift something extraordinary to their alma mater—a work of art that would not only beautify the school but also inspire current and future students with Yellow Jacket pride. The ambition was to capture the essence of RRHS in its entirety, reflecting the rich diversity of arts, sports, academics, and extracurricular activities that define the Yellow Jacket experience.
The Mural Unveiled
The mural vividly depicts the Yellow Jacket mascot, with an intense and dynamic energy, breaking through a cinder block wall. This powerful imagery is rendered in such a way that the wall appears to have a three-dimensional quality, adding to the mural's immersive effect. Behind the shattered facade, a hive-like structure emerges, intricately showcasing various aspects of student life at RRHS, including baseball, football, visual arts, science, drama, chorus, band, golf, basketball, student council, soccer, and technology.
Atop the mural, a realistic yellow banner proudly proclaims, "Once a Jacket, always a Jacket," a sentiment that resonates deeply within the hearts of RRHS alumni. The bottom of the mural is dedicated to its benefactors, bearing the inscription "From the Graduating Class of 2020." Positioned in the Junior Building and prominently displayed as one ascends the staircase, the mural stands as a beacon of school spirit and a source of inspiration for all who pass by.
A Personal Touch
For Riley Mills, being part of the project was particularly meaningful. As a member of the graduating class of 2020, painting this mural was akin to leaving a personal legacy within the walls of a school that played a significant role in his life. It was an opportunity to give back to a place that fostered incredible friendships and learning experiences, both with peers and educators alike. This mural, therefore, is not just an artistic contribution but a testament to the lasting impact of the RRHS community on its students.
Through the collaboration of ABRM Elite Murals with Project Graduation and RRHS, the Yellow Jacket mural has become a cherished addition to the school's environment. It stands as a lasting tribute to the resilience, diversity, and spirit of the class of 2020, encapsulating their journey and the essence of what it means to be a Yellow Jacket.
